Proverbs Daily Devotional: Day 27

“As water reflects a face, so a person’s heart reflects the person.”

Proverbs 27:19

Have you heard the spilled coffee story before? Imagine you’re walking down the street, full cup of coffee in hand. Someone bumps into you, the lid comes off, and some of your coffee spills out. Why did you spill the coffee? You might say because someone bumped into you. You might say because the person who served your coffee didn’t put the lid on tightly enough. You might even say because you weren’t careful enough to stay out of someone else’s way. But the real reason why you spilled coffee out of your cup, is because there was coffee in your cup. Had there been tea, you would have spilled tea. Had there been water… you get it.

Here’s the point of the story – life comes along and bumps into us sometimes. Circumstances shake our peace and break our sense of balance. And when that happens, what will spill out of us is what’s inside of us. So the greater question is not “why did you spill the coffee?” The greater question is, “when life hits you hard and unexpectedly, what is inside of you that will come to the surface?” Will it be rage, anger, and blame? Or will it be peace, balance, and love? The writer of Proverbs said it well, “As water reflects a face, so a person’s heart reflects the person.” What is in your heart, and is it what you want to be there?
