Proverbs Daily Devotional: Day 10
“Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth.”
Proverbs 10:4
A friend of mine is an entrepreneur, and was asked if luck has anything to do with success for an entrepreneur. Here is his response: “Let’s talk about luck to answer this question…. If I said I will give you a million dollars if you roll a 6 on a die roll… that would be left up to luck.
If I made the same offer except I said you could roll as many times as you wanted to… that would be determination. You may roll 1-5 over 1000 times but if you stop rolling… that’s on you. You gave up.
That is how business is. No one ever said you had one chance. Those who have the most perseverance have the best chance of winning.” – Brian Foshee
Substitute diligence for determination or perseverance, and you have the meaning of this Proverb. Diligence matters. As Christians, we are not promised an easy life, or easy answers. But we are promised that if we persist, if we keep the faith, if we keep our eyes on the prize that is offered in a life lived for Jesus, we will be rewarded. Those who give up too soon may claim that God didn’t answer their prayer, or that the promises of the Bible aren’t true and reliable. Those who work with diligence know that what is worth having is worth striving for. Are you lazy, or are you ‘lucky’?
