31 Days With the Book of Proverbs: A Daily Bible Study – Day 1
We invite you to join us daily in the month of May for a Bible study of the Book of Proverbs with Dr. Drew Harvey, Resident Pastor.
“The fear of the LORD Is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
Proverbs 1:7
Proverbs are sayings that come to us from the deep traditions of Hebrew faith. Some say Solomon wrote them. We are confident that rabbis and teachers of the faith of Yahweh from the days of the Return from Babylon as well as countless Christian pastors and laity to the present moment have turned to the Proverbs for guidance, hope, and renewal.
We need as never before wisdom, faithful instruction, and above all knowledge of right and wrong, of life and death, of hope and love. We find our way when we “live and move and have our being” in God (Acts 17:28). So why don’t we? Why do we turn to easy answers, to convenient understandings that lead only to dead ends? Perhaps we have believed our own advertisements! Riches, technology, constant improvement, and a reluctance to learn anything from the past…and where are we in this covid 19 experience?
Wisdom is the awareness that God is in our very midst, that every moment is lived in his loving kindness, and that the sustaining power of life comes through his grace. It is found in surrender to God’s love. It is discovered when we turn to our Lord Jesus for life and transformation. It is experienced in God’s forgiveness. It is uncovered when with Thomas we turn to Jesus and cry “My Lord and my God!” This is the beginning of knowledge, this is where we must turn to find love and hope.

Acts 17:28 has been my favorite verse for many years. Bill’s mother embroidered and framed it for my 50th birthday. It is hanging in my bedroom. I will read Proverbs with you this month. Thanks for your teaching.
